Mophato Dance Theatre wows audiences ahead of World Dance Festival trip
Botswana’s pioneer in contemporary dance and storytelling, Mophato Dance Theatre, made history this past week with a captivating Double Bill showcase held at the Maitisong Theatre. Conceptualised and brought to life by Kreative Koncept Kola in collaboration with Mophato, the event was part of the company’s fundraising efforts ahead of their participation in the World Dance Festival pencilled to take place in South Korea this September. The showcase featured two powerful pieces: 'Borwa', choreographed by Andrew Kola, and 'Inyaya', choreographed by Kalima Mipata. Both works delve into Botswana’s rich history and cultural identity, offering audiences a moving blend of movement and meaning.
Held over four days, Thursday (a corporate evening), Friday, Saturday, and an added Sunday show, the performance drew overwhelming support. The Friday and Saturday shows were sold out, prompting organisers to extend the run to Sunday due to high demand. Many attendees, deeply moved by the performances, returned with friends and family for a second viewing. In an interview with this publication, Andrew Kola, Director of Mophato Dance Theatre, said the showcased works are part of the group’s core repertoire, revived specifically to raise funds for the upcoming international competition. “This is our way of showcasing what we can do, so that people can support us.
We don’t have sufficient sponsorship yet,” he explained. The World Dance Festival is a prestigious international competition expected to feature over 20 countries. Kola noted that while the group is excited about the opportunity to represent Botswana, they are currently seeking pledges, sponsorships, or partnership opportunities from individuals and corporate entities to help cover the costs of their participation.
