Thirteen-year-old girl raped AGAIN by her on-bail uncle

A 13-year-old girl has disclosed to her teachers that she was sexually abused by her 28-year-old uncle during the recent school holidays in Maun. The victim, a junior secondary school student, broke down in tears at school and confided in the Guidance teachers about the ordeal.

According to reports, she had travelled to Maun with her mother to visit her grandmother when the abuse occurred. Shockingly, the uncle is already out on bail for a pending rape case, also involving the same child.

It is alleged that the previous incident took place some time ago but was reported to the police, resulting in the ongoing pending court case. Sources close to the family say they are devastated and have pleaded with police to ensure the safety of the minor. The case has since been reported again to police officers in Maun. Maun Station Commander, Superintendent Joseph Lepodise, declined to provide details when contacted for comment, stating that the matter involves a minor and is being handled with the necessary sensitivity. Investigations into the case are ongoing.

The case brought back concerns raised earlier this year by the Ombudsman, Advocate Stephen Tiroyakgosi. Speaking at the Maun Voices Convention in May, Tiroyakgosi raised concerns about delays in prosecuting child abuse cases, questioning whether the root cause lay within the system or in the inaction of those entrusted to act.

“I am much concerned to hear that abuse cases are dragging, and I am wondering if it is because of the system or the laziness of those involved,” he said.

Tiroyakgosi called on all actors, including social workers, police, and magistrates, to put the interests and rights of children first.
