The P100 000 transaction mystery
Township Rollers management is not impressed by the Botswana Football League (BFL), following an alleged transaction made to former club president and investor, Tendani Sebata earlier this year as ‘advancement’. According to inside sources at Rollers, Sebata, through the accountant of the club, received at least P100 000.00 from the Premier League in April, a month when the players went unpaid while the executive committee of the club remained in the dark about the transaction.
“It appears that he made contact with the premier league for that transaction to go through. It is mind-boggling to us how the premier league went ahead and processed the transaction because Township Rollers is represented by the chairman, Phempheretlhe Pheto and Secretary General, Sidney Magagane at BFL. We wrote a letter to the league but their response failed to address our questions, unfortunately,” the informant shared.
The local giants, according to BG Sport sources, wrote a letter to BFL seeking an explanation on what they deemed as an ‘anomaly’ concerning operations in the league and further demanded that the BFL must release the club’s prize money in full.
This publication is in possession of a letter of response to Township Rollers from BFL, which intended to provide clarity on how the transaction came to pass. “We have noted the challenges you are currently experiencing and deeply sympathize with your plight. The P100 000.00 advance payment that was paid out on the 04th of April 2025, was made directly from the sponsorship amount, specifically the prize money vote. It follows therefore that failure to replenish the amount will render the process incomplete and prize money to clubs would not be able to be paid in full,” part of the BFL’s response to the club read.
Rollers officials however will not lie down in defeat and are looking to pursue the matter further as they believe that the BFL’s response does not entirely address their enquiries.
“We are still following this matter, we need more explanation, there are only two people who can process a request with the league for an advancement and both were not aware of the developments.
We need to feel that our finances are safe under the BFL but with what has happened it is really worrying. To get an advancement in the Premier League, a team has to apply for it, we want to
understand who applied for it on behalf of Township Rollers and if they are eligible to do so,” chairman of Township Rollers, Pheto told this publication when contacted to provide an update on the matter. The club is expected to present their qualms with how the situation penned out before the board chairperson of the league, Peter Emolemo Kesitilwe this week before proceeding further in seeking reimbursement after the BFL Annual General Meeting (AGM).
Information reaching this publication is that the BFL, AGM will be held on Saturday (12/07/2025) at Cresta Hotel in Palapye, where several issues are expected to be discussed by the shareholders and the BFL board, particularly updates on the proposed return of the Top 8 and Charity cup tournaments ahead of the new season.
