President DGB Earns Black Belt in Hungary
Wrapping up his recent working visit to Hungary, President Duma Gideon Boko had the pleasure of attending the 2025 World Judo Championships, where he was surprised with the award of an honorary black belt. While DGB can’t promise he’ll be throwing political opponents over his shoulder any time soon, he noted: “I’m deeply honoured by this recognition of my long-standing involvement in the world of judo.” Sport, as we know, is more than just recreation. That’s why we’re committed to advancing sport as a strategic sector to open new pathways for our nation and its youth. It’s refreshing to finally see sport being taken seriously at the highest level. Botswana is already set to host the World Relay Championships in 2026,a major win. But why stop there? Perhaps it’s time we throw our hat in the ring and bid to host a future World Judo Championship. Gongwe go ka jega sengwe. After all, wouldn’t it be something to see President DGB showing off his judo moves?
No Sector is Safe ...Gaborone City Council Cracks Down on Clinics! In its relentless city-wide upkeep campaign, the Gaborone City Council (GCC) is taking no prisoners, and this time, it's not just dodgy restaurants and unhygienic supermarkets in the firing line. In a refreshing twist, the clean-up spotlight has now turned to the health sector. Yes, even clinics aren't immune! Marape and Marape Family Clinic, tucked away in Maruapula, has found itself on the wrong side of the law after being charged for improper disposal of clinical waste. The clinic reportedly mixed medical and domestic waste, and to make matters worse, dumped it in a bush along the banks of the Segoditshane River. The GCC didn't just wag a finger. The clinic was fined and ordered to hire a certified clinical waste management company to clean up their mess.
But it didn’t end there; they were also instructed to rehabilitate the soil by treating the affected area and to submit an official disposal slip as proof. Well done, GCC! We don’t know where this energy was hiding all this time, but we’re here for it. Tswelelang, le ba tsuolole ka thupana ya molao!
FOOD SAFETY VIOLATIONS LEAD TO CLOSURE OF PICK N PAY FRESH PRODUCE
Gaborone City Council (GCC) has charged T Ray Mark Investments, trading as Pick n Pay at South Ring Mall, with multiple public safety violations. The charges include employing staff without the required personal protective equipment (PPE) and operating in unsanitary conditions that would make even a tomato blush. In addition, the establishment faces a further charge under the Waste Management Act for poor handling and storage of waste, a gentle reminder that garbage deserves proper care, too. As a result, the Restaurant and Fresh Produce sections have been temporarily shut down until the store complies with regulations governing food establishments. Meanwhile, several food items on the premises have been confiscated and condemned, because not everything 'fresh' should be served with a side of health risk. The City is watching.
