Chokoma is taking his craft to a whole new level. In May, the hitmaker of Mother tongue is set to host his first edition of One Man standing.
The event dubbed Toro Music Festival will take place on May 3rd, and will be held at the Royal Aria Stadium. Chokoma nicknamed Chakachaka, will feature an array of artists including the hilarious and social media sensation, Coster X, DDD, Charma Gal, Han C, Skizoh BW, Dr Vom, Vib Obligatto, THABO, LERa, Xwala, Brizzy who recently collaborated with Han C, Gouveia, DM Guys, Jimi-D, and others. Early bird tickets are sold out.
Other tickets are on sale for 150 and P200. Speaking in an interview with this publication recently, he explains that the idea behind this event is inspired by the popularity of sekgalagadi music and the captivating dance that has taken the country by storm. He also says that his music, and that of his fellows Bakgalagadi is stylish and completely different to what Batswana have been consuming such as Piano and other genres.
This difference offers the audience with diversity. “Every time that we release a song, people go crazy. And this is also evident in the number of bookings that I have been getting,” he explains noting that this year alone, he has had a chance to perform at the Miss Botswana grand finale, and the recently held BNSC Sports Awards. All of these developments, also come on the backdrop of his recent success at the BOMU awards where he was crowned the Best Male.
He further says that while he and his team are busy putting together the preparations for the May event, he is busy in studio working on releasing a five track EP, which will tie very well with the upcoming event. “I do not have the name of the EP yet, the name will be influenced by the song that will be popular among the audience,” he explains. This year, he points out that he released Leshagonkata which also did incredibly well. With the EP, he will once again work with Tino Jazz, his producer.
Going back to why he is hosting this festival, which is not easy to put together, he explains that he wants to show others that just like Chokoma came to Gaborone and made it, they too can also make it. “I also want to show people that we can also make it with music that represents out languages,” he says noting that he also wants to show the youth that nothing is impossible. “They must remember that we are powerful,” he says.
