Ruth Thomas sets out to redefine pageantry in Botswana
The newly-crowned Miss Botswana 2025/2026, Ruth Thomas, 23, radiates confidence, excitement, and enthusiasm. She is every bit the queen she believes herself to be, embracing every opportunity that comes her way.
For Ruth, pageantry is more than just looking glamorous and beautiful; it is a calling — a platform for driving purpose. Speaking to The Midweek Sun this week, Ruth said she has a lot to offer Botswana.
'I think the mistake we make as beauty queens is trying to dilute the true essence of pageantry. We often enter with the expectation of being the most beautiful and glamorous, but in reality, it is about purpose, impact, and driving positivity.'
Amid the excitement leading to her crowning, a video of her attending Prophet David Uche's church in South Africa went viral. In the video, the prophet is seen asking her what she wants, to which she responded, 'The Miss Botswana crown.'
The prophet then said to her, 'go and succeed.' When she ultimately won the coveted title, rumours swirled that she went to the prophet to demand that she be given the Miss Botswana title and that his prophecy made it come to life. However, Ruth clarifies this misconception.
'What people do not know is that I have been fellowshipping at that church for a long time. I am a spiritual person,' she explains.
'There had been many prophecies about me reaching the stars before, but unfortunately, Uche’s prophecy was captured on camera, and it went viral.'
She emphasises that she did not seek out the prophecy.
'He was led by the spirit to locate me in that crowd. He did not know me or where I came from. I think people assume I went there to ask for something, but he simply affirmed that I was on the right path and that I would succeed.'
Beyond the crown, Ruth is passionate about reshaping the narrative surrounding women.
'I want to change the perception that women are only valued for their looks. I want to create a world where women feel seen and capable.'
Ruth, who hails from Masunga and comes from humble beginnings, has always been passionate about beauty and cosmetics, which led her to become a beauty advisor.
She educates people on skincare, teaches beginners how to apply makeup, and promotes healthier ways to use cosmetics.
'I have always wanted to be Miss Botswana,' she says.
'I participated in other pageants as preparation for this moment. I competed in Miss Top Model Botswana in 2023 and reached the top 16 in Miss Universe Botswana in 2024.'
Despite advice from some to take a break after Miss Universe, Ruth felt a strong conviction to go for Miss Botswana.
'I knew that if I did not do it now, I might never do it. I am grateful I took that chance.'
She auditioned in Selibe Phikwe, a moment she recalls with nervous excitement.
'Luckily, there were not many people there, so I was able to express myself freely. When I made it to the top 30, I realised the judges saw potential in me.
“It was a high-pressure competition, as many of the ladies had extensive pageant experience, but I remained focused.'
While Miss Botswana organisation has faced allegations of mistreatment, Ruth states that her experience has been different.
'I have never been a victim of any mistreatment; I have had the best time of my life. If I were unhappy, I would speak out because they have created a safe space for us.'
With her reign just beginning, Ruth Thomas is determined to use her platform to inspire, uplift, and make a lasting impact beyond the world of pageantry.
