BIUST graduates celebrate achievement
The Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) held its 9th Graduation Ceremony on Saturday, where 335 graduates, comprising 267 undergraduates and 68 postgraduates, were celebrated for their achievements.
With the theme ‘Bridging Academia with Industry: Navigating Entrepreneurial Excellence in STEM,’ the event underscored the vital connection between academic learning and industry application, particularly in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
Minister of Education and Skills Development, Douglas Letsholathebe, delivered an inspiring keynote address that highlighted the importance of entrepreneurship and innovation in shaping Botswana's future.
'You stand at the crossroads of knowledge and industry,' he told the graduates. 'Your education has equipped you to be entrepreneurs, innovators, and leaders who will drive our economy forward.'
Letsholathebe emphasised that the graduates' education prepared them for various paths, whether in established companies, their own ventures, or public service. He urged the Class of 2024 to contribute to the nation’s economy by bringing fresh ideas and solutions to the industries they enter.
'BIUST graduates are already making significant contributions to Botswana's economy. You must follow in their footsteps,' he asserted. Acknowledging the challenges that the graduates faced during their academic journey, the Minister recognised the sacrifices made and the dedication shown.
'Your perseverance, critical thinking, and problem solving abilities will be your greatest assets as you navigate the future,' he remarked, also thanking BIUST's faculty and staff for their role in nurturing the graduates.
Vice Chancellor Professor Otlogetswe Totolo echoed these sentiments in his address. He expressed pride in the graduates and emphasised the university's commitment to bridging the gap between academia and industry.
'We aim to foster innovation and drive Botswana toward a knowledge based economy, in line with national goals such as Vision 2036,' he stated. He urged the graduates to embrace an entrepreneurial spirit and to be proactive in their careers. 'Your education at BIUST has prepared you to be market ready,' Totolo added.
In highlighting the university’s successes, Totolo cited collaborations with industry partners, including projects like the BOTSAT-1 satellite and the Crop Management System for Temo Letlotlo.
'These initiatives demonstrate our commitment to contributing to national development and innovation,' he explained. He encouraged graduates to take inspiration from these achievements as they embark on their professional journeys.
When delivering a keynote address, Vice President Slumber Tsogwane urged graduates to transform their academic knowledge into actionable outcomes.
'As you graduate today, remember that your degrees are not just a personal achievement but a tool for societal change,' he remarked. Tsogwane emphasised the need for graduates to embrace innovation and adaptability to drive progress in Botswana's economy. 'The future of our nation lies in your hands,' he stated, encouraging them to prioritise lifelong learning.
The sentiment of gratitude permeated the ceremony, with Letsapa Mojaphoko, a member of the University Council, delivering a heartfelt vote of thanks acknowledging the contributions of key dignitaries, staff, and families, emphasising the collective effort behind the graduates’ success.
'Today is a testament to your hard work and commitment,' Mojaphoko told the graduates. He expressed appreciation for the support provided by the community and urged graduates to honour the values instilled in them throughout their education.
Lesego Osman, Head of Business and Commercial Banking at Stanbic Bank, emphasised the role of education in driving societal change. In his remarks he encouraged graduates to embrace collaboration and take bold risks in their future careers.
'Your education is a powerful tool for transformation,' he stated, inviting graduates to explore opportunities within Stanbic Bank. Reflecting on his journey as a former student, Osman, inspired the graduates to honour their cultural heritage while pursuing innovation.
The ceremony also featured the 2024 valedictorian’s speech by Admire Khulumo, who reflected on his journey from Zimbabwe to BIUST. Khulumo expressed gratitude for the support he received from the university and the opportunities that shaped his experience.
