Streak of killings a concern in Maun as man hacks girlfriend to death

 

The murder toll is rising at a worrying speed in Maun, since the beginning of the year to date, a total of 10 people have been murdered.

Not only are people being killed, but they are also butchered in the most hair-raising incidents. The latest case is the murder of a 32-year-old woman who was hacked to death with an axe by his lover this past weekend in Thito ward, Maun.

It is alleged that around midnight on Saturday, the woman ran out of the couple's bedroom screaming for help. She ran towards her brother’s room, calling his name and asking that he saves her from her furious lover but before the brother could make sense of what was happening, the man hacked her with an axe twice on the head.

The woman dropped to the ground, and the man, who is also father to their four-year-old baby, ran off leaving the woman bleeding and the brother terrified.

On the same night, a 24-year-old man from Winela ward in Maun stabbed to death a 33-year-old man from Disaneng ward at a local bar.

According to eye witnesses, the accused stabbed the deceased with a knife following an altercation and he died on the spot. The two men were not strangers, they were identified as men who always fixed people’s broken phones at the mall.

“They were in the business of cell-phone repairs; we are not sure if their fight was business related.”

Maun Station Commander Dennis Zilawe confirmed investigating the two cases.

Zilawe said they are on the hunt for the man who allegedly killed his lover, adding that preliminary investigations have revealed that he was seen in Palapye a few days ago. A car he was using was found dumped in Palapye.

“We are not sure about his age but from what we gather, he is from Zimbabwe. We are appealing to members of the public to assist us in finding him,” he said.

The police boss said that the sister of the man accused of killing another at a bar handed him to the police. The accused will be arraigned before the court this week.

Zilawe said the use of a knife to kill people in his policing area was of concern, noting that in most cases recorded, people were stabbed. He confirmed that the murder toll now stands at 10 people compared to six cases they recorded during the same period of January to August last year.
