Man, 29, beaten up by residents on allegations of raping granny, 70

Residents of Seleka Village in Tswapong district have allegedly battered a man black and blue for repeatedly raping a 70-year-old granny.

Sources say the incident occurred at the elderly woman’s ploughing field in Mmasebue lands. The alleged rapist is suspected to have found the elderly woman alone and proceeded to rape her. Once finished, the man left, leaving the old woman traumatised and in tears.

She reported the matter to the police later that day. However, it is alleged that the police were slow to respond, which thing angered the residents. They then launched a big manhunt for the suspect until he was found.

Station Commander at Martin’s Drift Police Station Moses Morolong confirmed investigating the matter.

He said after the incident was reported to them, they began hunting for the suspect. And through the assistance of members of the public, he was arrested five days ago. It is alleged that at the time of his arrest, the woman’s phone was found in his possession.

“The suspect is a 29-year-old man from Bobonong who resides in the area. We arrested, questioned and released him. He has not been taken to court because we are still investigating.

“However, we will soon take the file to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for the commencement of court proceedings,' Morolong said.

Morolong confirmed that residents had roughed up the accused before bringing him to them and advised against such behaviour as it can potentially get them into trouble.

Morolong denied allegations that the police were slow to react on the matter and that they told the abused woman that there was not enough evidence to work with resulting in the community taking the law into their hands.

“It is not true, there is no how we can send back someone on the excuse that there was no evidence, the case was registered the same day it occurred meaning the police were working on it.
