The Botswana Council of Non-Governmental Organisations (BOCONGO) has discouraged their members to use the “illegitimate” Constitutional review process to solicit political points.

BOCONGO Executive Director, Kagiso Molatlhwa on Tuesday issued a stern warning against members who do this, stating that BOCONGO is a non-partisan organisation that cannot be aligned to any political party, despite antagonistic tendencies from government regarding the Constitutional Amendment Bill 2024.

Some CSO members proposed that following the defeat of some ruling BDP members in the first batch of Bulela Ditswe elections held over the weekend, some could be approached while they are still angry and dejected. They believe that such, especially incumbent Members of Parliament, could now have a change of heart and support civil society views concerning the constitutional review.

Former union leader, Jafta Radibe had proposed that perhaps it is time for BOCONGO to consider advising their numerous member-organisations to take a political position especially now that general elections are around the corner.

“Recently, Faith Mission, which has a number of members across the country, plainly stated that if government does not bend regarding concessions on the Constitutional review, they will advise their members not to vote members of the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) back into power in October,” he said, adding that this could be an effective way to get legislators to listen.

He further said politicians and those in power need a stern reminder that they are in power because of the people, and can be removed after their five-year contract lapses.

However, Molatlhwa explained that BOCONGO distances itself from aligning with any political party or any other body for fear of being compromised. “We don’t bargain, and say do this for us, we will do this for you,” she said, adding that civil society is about promoting social justice for the masses.

BOCONGO Board member, Moses Selebatso also expressed disappointment that some members have taken the constitutional review to political rallies.

“We should remain truthful to ourselves and to Batswana and not align our views to any political party.” Selebatso concurred with Molatlhwa that that it is critical that they remain non-partisan and fight a clean fight to the bitter end.
