SHE Summit anticipated to change mindset
Dr. Precious Serero, Managing Director at Phemo Wellness Centre says the global landscape of safety, health, and environment has witnessed unprecedented shifts, especially in the wake of the recent pandemic.
She said the challenges posed by the COVID-19 Crisis have forced everyone to re-evaluate and redefine the very foundations of how to ensure the well-being of the workforce and the sustainability of the environment. 'As we emerge from the pandemic, it becomes clear that the post-pandemic era demands not just resilience but innovation, adaptability, and a forward-thinking approach,' Dr Serero said, when addressing the media in Gaborone this week about the upcoming Safety, Health and Environment Summit.
Botswana Safety Health and Environment Summit and Expo, scheduled to take place on the 3rd and 4th of July 2024 at Boipuso Hall, Fairgrounds, Gaborone, will be held under the theme, 'Innovation For Impact: SHE in The 21st Century.'
Dr Serero stated that in the global landscape, and specifically in the context of Botswana, the need for a summit of this nature has never been more apparent. “The national priorities of creating a future-ready workforce and the transformative agenda underscore the need for proactive initiatives that align with these aspirations.' She said President Mokgweetsi Masisi has identified Mindset Change as the fifth priority in the Reset Agenda, underscoring the urgency of adopting new perspectives and approaches. Further, that the Summit is poised to play a vital role in fostering this transformative mindset, particularly within the realms of Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE).
She further explained that innovation is not just about new technologies or systems; it is also about a change in mindset. Dr Serero who is also the chairperson of the summit indicated that embracing new ways of thinking and addressing challenges is essential for creating a safer, healthier, and more sustainable environment. This summit, she said supports the transformation agenda implemented by the President, which aims to drive Botswana forward through innovative practices and sustainable development.
“Historically, safety, health, and environmental concerns have been predominantly associated with high-risk industries such as mining. Botswana’s mining sector has made impressive strides in sustainable SHE practices, setting an example for other sectors. This conference advocates for extending these best practices to other industries, including service sectors, to ensure comprehensive safety standards across all fields,” Dr Serero told the press.
She stated that with increasing attention on mental health, it is imperative to think beyond physical safety in the workplace. She told attendants that Psychological safety is just as important, and everyone must prioritise it to create a truly safe and supportive work environment. Dr Serero pointed out that addressing mental health and ensuring psychological safety will produce a future-ready workforce capable of innovation and contributing significantly to the economy.
“This summit will feature keynote presentations and panel discussions led by industry leaders and experts. These sessions will cover the latest trends, challenges, and innovations in SHE practices. Attendees will have the opportunity to connect with peers, industry leaders, policymakers, and key stakeholders, fostering strategic partnerships and collaborations,” she said.
Key Objectives of the SHE Summit and Expo are: Building Capacity. The Summit will equip participants with the latest knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to excel in safety, health, and environment (SHE). Participants are also expected to gain insights and practical strategies from industry experts to enhance workplace safety and health.
The event will also Fostering Public-Private Partnerships, as collaboration between public and private sectors is key in addressing SHE challenges. Promote dialogue and cooperation among government bodies, industry leaders, and community organizations for comprehensive solutions.
It will also be an opportunity for Knowledge Sharing. Dr Serero adds that it will facilitate the exchange of knowledge and best practices through experiences, case studies, and innovative approaches, as well as empower attendees to implement effective SHE solutions within their organisations.
It will also promote innovation and inspire the adoption of cutting-edge technologies and innovative methodologies to enhance safety protocols, health monitoring systems, and environmental sustainability practices. In addition, it will enhance Mental Health Awareness and elevate the importance of mental health in the workplace, as well as explore effective strategies to support mental well-being and foster a supportive, inclusive work environment.
Lastly, the Summit will delve in driving Sustainable Practices, with emphasis on promoting sustainable practices to protect the environment, and provide actionable insights and strategies to reduce environmental impact and promote sustainable development within organisations.
