Former President and Botswana Patriotic Front (BPF) Patron, Ian Khama has claimed that there has been an attempt to kill him through poisoning.

According to Khama, the attempt was made in the heat of the 2019 general election following the formation of the BPF. Addressing a political rally virtually in Serowe, Khama revealed that there are also questions that are unanswered regarding the death of the BPF founding Secretary General, Roseline Panzirah-Matshome.

“Circumstances leading to the passing of our founding secretary general remain a mystery. But we know that the CAVA have been involved and they poisoned her.

“This is the same scenario with the former Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) member in Mahalapye, a certain Emmanuel who died few months after exposing the BDP in an affidavit explaining how the CAVA cheated during the 2019 general election,” Khama claimed. According to the BPF Patron, the ruling party should be reminded of how they harassed him in 2019 as they seek votes for this year’s general election.

“Trouble is coming and I will also remind them of the humiliation they meted against me. I am coming to Botswana soon. Their candidates will be asking for votes from you, do not entertain them.

“The very same people who are abusing you and BaGammangwato right now will be flying with helicopters coming to you to solicit votes. You have to show them that the power lies with you,” Khama rallied his supporters. He

said the government of the day thrives on fabricating and creating lies about other people. Khama told the gathering that in 2019 they claimed that he stole P100 billion from Bank of Botswana.

The central bank has denied missing any funds and even the minister of Finance Peggy Serame denied that there are any funds missing from Bank of Botswana, Khama reminded. He dismissed the unlawful firearms charges against him and former Director General of the Directorate of Intelligence and Security (DIS) Isaac Kgosi as fabrication by the current DIS boss, Peter Magosi.

“The DIS took police commissioner into custody but the police did not know anything. He was arrested for the licenses. They wanted him to lie, that is why they arrested and charged him.

“Tshekedi Khama and Anthony Khama together with their wives were arrested but were never charged. This was done just because they are related to me. The plan was to get to me. You see what they did with Dr Thapelo Matsheka. Kgosi (Isaac) was arrested five times and searched 12 times,” Khama stated.

According to Khama, even Kgosi Sediegeng Kgamane was taken in by the DIS at their Sebele offices. The former president contended that the government and President Mokgweetsi Masisi has now managed to convince Kgosi Serogola Seretse and Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Kgotla Autlwetse to fight their battles.

BDP Communications and International Relations Committee Chairman, Kagelelo Kentse described Khama’s remarks as “extremely unfortunate” especially coming from a former head of state who presided over extrajudicial killings and many other people went missing or died mysteriously under his watch.

“He must state for the record and make evidence available how those two incidents he mentions can be associated with the BDP. With all due respect we don’t want to be drawn into discussing the dead, we respect Roseline and her family who are BDP members. We want her to rest peacefully,” Kentse said in an interview.
