Si6 Metals secures seven-year prospecting licence in Botswana

Australian exploration company Si6 Metals has obtained a prospecting licence (PL) 123/2024, from the Botswana Department of Mines, valid for up to seven years.

This PL strengthens Si6’s portfolio, which includes the Maibele North Ni-Cu-Co-PGE resource and the high-grade Cu-Ag discoveries at Airstrip and Dibete.

The licence is located 10km east of the Selebi Phikwe Nickel-Copper mine and processing facility.

This facility, which has been on care and maintenance since 2016, includes a concentrator, a smelter, rail lines, dams, and tailings dumps.

It is partially owned by Premium Nickel Resources.

Selebi Phikwe has a rich mining history, having opened in 1980 and operated for 36 years.

At its peak, the site employed more than 5,000 individuals and produced a total of 26.6 million tonnes with grades of 0.58% Ni and 1.03% Cu.

Despite its current status, the mine remains fully permitted for NI-Cu-Co operations.

The newly acquired prospecting licence covers an area of 908km², increasing Si6 Metals's land position in the Limpopo Mobile Belt by more than 45% to 2,868km².

This region is known for nickel and copper production.

Included in Si6 Metals' portfolio are three joint venture licences, totalling 142km², in which the company holds a 66% interest alongside BCL.

As part of its strategic review, Si6 Metals will initiate a reconnaissance programme at the new PL area.

This review also encompasses the company's critical metals and minerals portfolio, which includes the Monument gold project in Western Australia.

Last June, Si6 Metals executed a term sheet agreement with Foxfire Metals to acquire a 50% stake in its portfolio of ten licences and tenements in Brazil.

In addition, Si6 unveiled its plan to enter a joint venture agreement concerning the tenements that cover more than 17,000 hectares in three states in the country.
