Botswana Football League (BFL) Chairman, Nicholas Zakhem was nowhere at the crowning moment of the 2023/24 season champions, Jwaneng Galaxy Football Club.

The final match of the season, held at the Jwaneng Galaxy Stadium, saw Jwaneng Galaxy go head-to-head with their mining rivals, Orapa United Football Club.

The anticipation was high, as fans and players alike waited for the trophy presentation, a symbol of Jwaneng Galaxy's hard-fought victory and league dominance.

At a press conference held yesterday, Zakhem explained his absence from the trophy ceremony, stating: 'I did not want to appear biased or favor one club over another, so I chose not to attend any matches, rather than just attend one and not the others.'

This season, there were three potential winners ahead of the last game, Jwaneng Galaxy, Township Rollers and Gaborone United (GU), which played in different places, kilometres apart.

Zakhem is the Director of the GU.

Traditionally, the BFL Chairman would have been present to award the trophy and medals to the champions, highlighting the significance of the moment and celebrating the achievement of the winning team. Instead, Bennett Mamelodi, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of BFL, stepped in to perform the duties.
