The Sir Seretse Khama Commemoration Marathon stands out as a unique event, combining historical significance with a celebration of fitness and community engagement. This inaugural Marathon, scheduled to take place in Serowe on June 29-30, not only honors the legacy of Botswana's founding father but also encourages unity and a healthy lifestyle among participants. By promoting these values, the marathon offers a distinctive and meaningful experience for all those involved.

In an interview this week, the Marathon coordinator Botshelo Nthaga said the main objective behind organizing the Sir Seretse Khama Half Marathon is to commemorate the legacy of Sir Seretse Khama, the first President of Botswana. The event aims to honor his contributions to the nation while promoting health, fitness, and community participation. He said the marathon event offers multiple race categories catering to participants of various fitness levels, which include 5km Fun Run, 10km Race, 21km Half Marathon and there will be prize money for the winners.

'Preparations have been underway, including securing partnerships with sponsors and stakeholders to ensure a successful event. Registration is ongoing, and the response from Batswana has been encouraging, showing strong community support and enthusiasm for the event; the registration date closes on June 19th. We urge potential sponsors to come on board to support this Marathon,' he said.

'The Sir Seretse Khama Half Marathon stands out due to its significance in honoring a key figure in Botswana's history. The marathon route may include notable locations associated with Sir Seretse Khama, offering participants a unique cultural and historical experience. We therefore encourage people to register on time, and companies to join in numbers,' Nthaga added.

He mentioned that the event will involve community involvement, fostering a sense of unity and pride among participants. He said that there will be categories of the disabled, with 10km of wheelchair runners for both males and females receiving prizes: first positions P5 000.00, second position P3500.00 and third Position P2 000. For other disabilities, Position 1 will get P3500, position 2 will be awarded P2,000.00 and position 3 will get P1500.00.
