Foetus found floating on water

As heavy rains poured throughout the country last week, some even causing flooding in some areas, residents of Gabane reeled in shock at the sight of what seemed like a baby floating in a water trench.

A close look confirmed their horror suspicions. It was indeed a foetus, clearly lifeless.

No one among all the people gathered by the water trench, watching as the body kept being tossed side to side by rain water, knew who the foetus belonged to.

Assistant Superintendent Mompoloki Ramaphoi of Mogoditshane Police has confirmed investigating the matter.

“We are still looking for the mother of the foetus. The foetus is four or so months old. We currently have no leads on who the mother could be,” Ramaphoi said, adding that the foetus was found naked.

The little body was almost decaying when it was found, suggesting that it had been there for a few days. Police will do all the necessary tests before the body is incinerated.

A worried Ramaphoi added that dumping of foetuses in his policing area is on the rise as they had recorded three cases in one week late last year, and that they have not identified the baby dumpers.

In one incident, dogs were seen fighting over a plastic that contained a dead foetus in Mogoditshane.

The plastic got torn on the side and a passer-by was alarmed by what seemed like a baby's body inside the plastic. They chased the dogs away and found the foetus inside the bag.

“We appeal to members of the public to help us locate the mothers, what they are doing is illegal and needs to be condemned,” Ramaphoi said.
