On the creativity behind Serame's power suit
You could almost spot Finance Minister, Peggy Serame from a while away. Her serene outfit commanded all the attention on the parliamentary grounds as she was just about to deliver the budget speech.
She looked pure and confident. Her brown briefcase, matched perfectly with her foot-ware, brought out the pure white high waist pants.
Perhaps Pekzaka was about to usher in a new dawn in the nation's economy. And what better way to do so than in an all-white-attire!
In her words, the attire was inspired by peace, hope and light.
The colour schemes in any attire carries more depth and meaning beyond just being aesthetically pleasing. In Setswana tradition, one's dress code can communicate whether they are in mourning or jubilation.
Biblically the colour white signifies purity.
Donald Nnoto, the co-founder and owner of KeNo Custom Suits explains that the Minister’s outfit is a power suit. It symbolises unwavering confidence, connotes grandness which inspires confidence in the person managing the country’s finances.
“We chose the high waist, straight leg design for her to accentuate her structure.”
Nnoto explained that the blouse is a silk silhouette design with a bow, to highlight her softness. The jacket is the focus of the entire outfit, made with an off-white textured fabric, to bring a bit of a contrast to the outfit.
The detail of the pure white covered buttons brings the jacket and the pure white pants in unison, so that the combination makes sense.
Furthermore, Nnoto said that the colour white has been associated with purity, hope and peace.
He said they wanted to capture her purity of intentions and ideology when serving Batswana, in spite of their political affiliations. In politics, the colour white has been worn by women in power who hold positions that can bring change to those they serve. “It is associated with new beginnings, that is why we chose to clothe her in all white”, Nnoto said.
Keno Suits has been designing and dressing prominent people since it opened shop in August 2014.
