Belm Oba (30), who is accused of raping a three-year-old child at Charles Hill two weeks ago, will be back at Gantsi Magistrate Court tomorrow (Thursday).

According to Charles Hill Station Commander Lefa Kareng, the suspect was left in the care of the baby only for him to allegedly take advantage of the minor.

“The biological mother had reportedly abandoned the child and left her in the care of another woman, and Oba, is the woman’s lover. So both Oba and the woman were left as guardians of the three-year-old,” Kareng explained.

The police boss explained that as investigations continued, it suspicions emerged that Oba may have been raping the minor on repeated ocacasions. The child was taken to the hospital and tests are still being conducted.

Police have successfully managed to locate the mother of the child and she might be slapped with a charge of child neglect for leaving her child and only resurfacing after the unfortunate incident occurred.

Kareng says in his policing area, they mostly get notified by social workers of similar issues while members of the public are somewhat reluctant to report.

“It is not common for the police to hear about such matters first, we mostly come into the picture when there is pregnancy involved and children dropping out of school,” he said.

Kareng said in 2022, they recorded nine rape and four defilement cases.
