Gaonyadiwe Leburu (70) of Dimajwe village in the Central District is alleged to have stabbed and killed 24-year-old Olebogeng Mokgethi who was dating his daughter (18).

Officer Commanding No. 2 District, Senior Superintendent Paul Oketsang said the deceased had gone to the old man’s house late at night demanding to see his girlfriend.

“It seems his approach was disrespectful to the old man. The boyfriend wanted to take away the girl but the father flatly refused.

“An altercation ensued, Mokgethi then picked a burning wood from the fireplace and hit the old man on the head with it.

“Enraged, the old man went back inside the house and got his spear. He then stabbed Mokgethi on the stomach and on his neck,” Oketsang related. He said it seems that after sustaining injuries, Mokgethi walked away bleeding. He was later found by a passer-by around 0300hrs on Sunday lying unconscious beside the road.

The passer-by alerted the police and Mokgethi was rushed to Sekgoma Memorial Hospital where he was certified dead upon arrival.

The police have arrested Leburu and he is expected to appear before court this week, facing a murder charge.

In a different incident, a 35-year-Serowe man committed suicide this past weekend after being released from prison.

The man, according to Oketsang, was released from Phikwe Prison this past Friday.

“He was out on bail, he had a case of unlawful wounding that happened in December, we are not sure if having a pending case is what led him to kill himself or not.

“The man was supposed to attend a funeral service of a family member in Serowe but he told his cousins that he would rather remain home.

“When they returned, they found him hanging from the roof,” Oketsang said.
