US Embassy donates P13.5 million medical supplies

The United States Embassy has handed over medical commodities worth P13.5 million (USD 1 million) to Botswana to ease acute shortages of essential health supplies and shore up the country's public health emergency response.The consignment, which includes paediatric and adult antiretroviral medicines (ARVs), laboratory reagents, early infant diagnosis (EID) kits, and tuberculosis (TB) diagnostic supplies, will be distributed to public health facilities nationwide.Speaking at the handover ceremony at Bontleng Clinic, U.S. Ambassador Howard Van Vranken said the donation underscores Washington's enduring commitment to fighting HIV/AIDS while strengthening Botswana's health system.He confirmed that the final batch of paediatric ARVs is expected to arrive on 21 July 2026."These supplies represent more than just medicines—they represent lives saved and futures secured," Ambassador Van Vranken said.Minister of Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Ketlhalefile F.C. Motshegwa, welcomed the timely intervention, noting that economic pressures have severely battered health delivery across the country.He reiterated America's track record in Botswana, including USD 3 million during the COVID‑19 pandemic and over USD 1 billion channelled through the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) over two decades.Motshegwa revealed that his ministry, now tasked with primary health care, is collaborating with the Ministries of Health and Agriculture to drive a "One Health" approach integrating human, animal, and environmental health to pre-empt future public health threats.According to U.S. government procurement updates for June 2026, the latest donation is part of a broader monthly procurement cycle, with USG-procured commodities valued in millions of dollars continuing to flow into the country.While the P13.5 million consignment represents a critical immediate intervention, officials indicated that sustained procurement pipelines remain essential to maintaining uninterrupted supply chains for HIV and TB programmes.The donation arrives as Botswana continues to grapple with supply chain disruptions, offering a critical lifeline for thousands of people who rely on consistent HIV and TB treatment.
