Teacher in hot soup over missing P20,000 PTA funds

Tempers are flaring at Moshana village near Kanye, where a Standard 7 teacher at Modise Primary School is accused of misusing P20,000 belonging to the school’s Parents and Teachers Association (PTA).Concerned parents who approached The Midweek Sun allege that the teacher, who was entrusted with the funds, has failed to return the money despite several requests. They claim the school administration is protecting her and refusing to take the matter to the police.“The teacher was keeping the money for the school PTA. Another teacher, who had P10,000, returned it when asked, but she has not brought back the P20,000,” a furious parent said.Some parents allege that the teacher, who recently started using crutches following an accident, is faking her condition to avoid accountability.“She sometimes forgets she is injured and runs when she sees a car coming to offer a lift. We believe she is using her injury as an excuse,” another parent said.Others believe she did not spend the money alone, claiming there could be more teachers involved who are scared to speak up.“They fear her because she used to be a police officer. They say she knows how to cover her tracks, and this is not her first time,” another parent alleged.When reached for comment, Moshana Village Chief Seata Marumo said he is aware of the matter and is concerned that it has not been reported to the police.“It is surprising that such a case, involving public funds, is being kept quiet. The school is supported by parents and other stakeholders. This kind of behaviour sets a bad example,” he said.The Midweek Sun's attempt to solicit a comment from the accused teacher proved futile as could not be found at the school premises, and her number rang unanswered.Meanwhile, Marumo also raised concern over other village issues, particularly the rise in home-brewed alcohol. He said such places have become havens for crime, including defilement and petty offences.He said that service delivery in Moshana village has stalled as government vehicles remain unserviced, with repoerts that there is money, thereby making it difficult to hold Kgotla meetings and outreach activities.
