Prisoner caught receiving dagga from villager while behind bars

A 39-year-old male inmate at Mahalapye Prisons was caught red-handed receiving marijuana while still in his prison uniform on Monday at the prison kraals.

According to reports, the inmate was seen slowly approaching a 27-year-old passer-by near the prison fence. The two engaged in a brief conversation before exchanging a plastic bag.

Their actions, however, did not go unnoticed, as a prison officer intervened. Upon searching the plastic bag handed to the inmate, officers discovered 10 sachets of marijuana weighing 100 grams.

Further searches on the suspect who delivered the package revealed P4 285 in cash in his pockets. The inmate was taken inside the prison for a thorough search and interrogation.

Mahalapye Central Police Station Commander, Superintendent Meshack Ranku, confirmed the incident, stating that the 27-year-old suspect from Mowana had been arrested for questioning.

A similar incident happened in November last year, when police apprehended Superintendent Joshua Joseph, the Deputy Officer in Charge at Gaborone’s First Offenders Prison.

The 42-year-old prison boss from Dukwi village was suspected of running a contraband smuggling ring.

Police officers and the accused colleagues were shocked to uncover a 20-litre container filled with dagga, along with multiple cellphones, headsets, phone chargers, and cigarettes, allegedly part of a sophisticated smuggling operation Joseph was running from within prison.

The Botswana Prison Service has previously raised concerns about the smuggling of goods and drugs into prison cells.

They have urged the public to collaborate with them in combating this issue and have suggested installing CCTV cameras across prisons to enhance security measures.
