MoH dismisses Covid 19 vaccine death rumours as flu cases rise

The Ministry of Health has rubbished circulating rumours that the COVID-19 vaccine weakens the immune system or contains harmful substances that may lead to sudden death, especially among those who catch the flu.These rumours, which have resurfaced during this winter season, allege that recent flu-related deaths may be linked to the vaccine.But the Ministry says there is no proof to support such claims.Responding to a media inquiry, Ministry spokesperson Dr Christopher Nyanga said there is no verified evidence connecting COVID-19 vaccines to any deaths or long-term health complications in Botswana.“Although the Ministry has experienced an increase in influenza-like illnesses since the start of the winter season, the number of cases remains within the expected range. The Ministry is not aware of any confirmed deaths directly linked to COVID-19 vaccines,” Dr Nyanga said.He affirmed that some individuals have reported side effects after vaccination, but added that such experiences are not uncommon and have also been recorded in other countries.“The Ministry has not conducted any specific survey or research on these claims and is therefore not able to verify them,” he said.Dr Nyanga explained that the Botswana Medicines Regulatory Authority (BoMRA) is mandated to investigate any serious reports of side effects following immunisation.“Through BoMRA, the Ministry can conduct investigations on individuals who may have reported to the said institution,” he said.On allegations that vaccinated individuals are more prone to catching flu or other viruses, Dr Nyanga was clear, “such claims cannot be true. Vaccines are meant to help the body fight diseases better.”He added that most vaccines used in Botswana have been scientifically tested and shown to strengthen immunity. To combat misinformation and boost public trust in the national vaccination programme, Dr Nyanga said the Ministry will continue to prioritise public education.“If there is a need for a targeted campaign on a specific health matter, such will be conducted,” he said.Asked whether the COVID-19 vaccine interacts with other respiratory illnesses like the flu in the long term, the Ministry stated that its main purpose is to help the body fight COVID-19.
