- Mmolotsi wants Masisi, Serame arrested - For financially crippling Botswana
Umbrella for Democratic Change parliamentary candidate for Francistown South, Wynter Mmolotsi does not understand why the police are not arresting Minister of Finance Peggy Serame and President Mokgweetsi Masisi for financially crippling the country.
Mmolotsi claims that when former President Ian Khama left the presidency, Botswana’s savings account had about P83 billion. However, figures have dropped so much in the last few years that the country was at one point sitting at only P2.8 billion this year.
In his effort to convince Batswana not to vote for the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), Mmolotsi said President Masisi and his Finance minister spent recklessly leading to the collapse of Botswana’s economy, thus, he implores the police to handcuff the president.
“It is evident that Masisi and Serame abused the money from P83 billion to such low figures. As we go for elections, remember that if you will be voting for BDP, chances are that all government employees will not get paid in November and December,” Mmolotsi said.
He is convinced that the country is flatly broke even as Masisi’s led government tries to deny it. He shared that not so long ago, Masunga council told service providers that their payments would be
processed at a later time as there was no money.
“Small businesses have not been paid because BDP has gobbled all monies, nothing will ever be fine again because these two have eaten your money.
“There is no economic growth, our economy has collapsed, Serame once projected that our economy would grow by three percent, but she has since gone back on that.”
Mmolotsi was shocked to see the government lying, saying they were not broke and that they had not paid people because of the independence holidays.
The former Member of Parliament for Francistown South was referring to a statement that the Ministry of Finance released this past Sunday explaining why some people have not been paid.
In the statement, the government said that they are committed to paying all and attributed the non-payment to the two-day independence holidays that led to non-business days for government and its agencies.
“The truth is that even before the independence holidays, people were still not paid, Ipelegeng workers will not be paid in future,” Mmolotsi argued.
Indeed, The Midweek Sun established that some service providers and government employees had been complaining that they were being sent from pillar to post regarding their payments. Even this
week, some service providers were still waiting for the government to pay them.
Addressing the matter a few weeks back, Minister Serame assured the nation that even though the country's finances had significantly dropped, the situation was not as bad as some people say, saying there was no need for panic.
Serame had at the time said government spending had been increased by funding the newly-introduced project of Chema Chema, money injected into Air Botswana and tariff subsidy to Botswana Power Corporation among other things.
