Jealous Lovers Denied Bail Over Truck-Assault That Left Baby Dead

Teko Mosweu, the 26-year-old man accused of driving a truck into his ex-girlfriend’s house and killing a baby in the process, has pleaded with the Lobatse Magistrate Court to release him on bail.But his plea has been firmly opposed by the victims, who survived the terrifying attack that claimed the life of a six-month-old baby girl. The incident, which shook the quiet village of Pitsane-Photlhokwe, unfolded in the early hours of June 13th.On Monday, the court heard that Mosweu rammed a truck into a house where his former lover, Amogelang Mogabe, 25, her seven-year-old daughter, fathered by the accused, her infant, and her current partner, Days Kago Talane, were sleeping. In court, a visibly shaken Amogelang opposed the bail application, recounting the moment she awoke to find her baby buried under corrugated iron sheets.“When I turned to look at my daughter, her neck was covered in metal roofing. My boyfriend was trapped under bricks,” she said. Neighbours and police helped pull them out of the rubble. Amogelang described Mosweu as a dangerous man who should not be allowed back into society.“He wanted to kill all of us. If he could do something this terrible while we were asleep, what else is he capable of if he walks free?” she asked rhetorically. The baby, who had sustained severe injuries, was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. Amogelang herself was hospitalised with head, back, and chest injuries, moving between Goodhope, Athlone, and eventually Princess MarinaHospital in Gaborone. Mosweu admitted in court that he was driven by rage and jealousy, accusing Amogelang of cheating.“She moved on while I was still around. It made me feel less of a man,” he said. He claimed he did not intend to kill and asked to be released with a restraining order. But the couple insists that’s not enough.“He’s been threatening us. He follows me around with sharp objects,” Talane, who now walks with crutches due to injuries sustained during the crash, said.“He once accused me of raping his child just to break us apart. But tests showed nothing happened. This man is not only violent, he is manipulative.” Talane added that the house that was destroyed belonged to his parents, and that Mosweu had previously ignored warnings from both families and police to keep his distance. The prosecutor argued that the attack was not random.“This was not an accident. The real issue is whether the accused acted with intent, and the facts point to that,” the prosecutor said. Mosweu is currently facing one charge of murder and three counts of attempted murder. The court will deliver its decision on the bail application on August 22.
