Huawei Technologies Botswana has contributed P100,000 to the 2026 Mascom Batanani Walk, adding its support to efforts to improve child protection and create safer communities in Botswana.

Held in Francistown on Saturday under the theme “Step Up for Child Safety,” the eighth edition of the walk brought together thousands of Batswana, businesses, government representatives, development partners and community members.

Huawei not only provided financial support but also had members of its team take part in the walk, joining other participants in raising awareness about child safety.

The company also participated in the Batanani stakeholder dinner, where partners discussed the importance of working together to strengthen child protection efforts.

For Qu Yang, Account Director at Huawei Technologies Botswana, the company’s involvement was about more than making a financial contribution.

“For Huawei, this initiative was about more than sponsorship. It was an opportunity to support Mascom and other partners in raising awareness around child safety. We are honoured to have contributed to an initiative that seeks to create safer and more supportive environments for children in Botswana.”

The P100,000 contribution will support the objectives of this year’s Batanani Walk, with funds going towards the development and improvement of child-friendly facilities at police stations in partnership with the Botswana Police Service and UNICEF Botswana.

The facilities are intended to provide children who have experienced or witnessed abuse with a safer and more welcoming environment in which to report their experiences and access support and justice.

For Huawei, supporting child safety is also part of its approach to responsible corporate citizenship and its belief that businesses have a role to play in addressing challenges within the communities where they operate.

The company said protecting children requires cooperation between government, the private sector, development partners and communities.

“The energy we experienced throughout the Batanani Walk, and the conversations shared at the stakeholder dinner, reinforced the importance of working together. We believe meaningful change happens when we move beyond conversation to action, and we are pleased to have played our part in this year’s Batanani Walk,” Yang said.

Huawei’s participation also reflects the growing role of private-sector partnerships in tackling social challenges. While the company’s core business is technology, its contribution to the Batanani Walk demonstrates how corporate support can be channelled towards initiatives with direct community

impact.

The company congratulated Mascom, the Botswana Police Service, UNICEF Botswana, fellow partners and the thousands of participants who supported this year’s campaign.

The focus on child safety has given the 2026 Batanani Walk a strong community message: protecting children requires more than awareness — it requires institutions, businesses and communities to work together and provide practical support.

For Huawei, the P100,000 contribution is its part in that collective effort to build safer and more supportive communities for children in Botswana.
