The Tlhobogang family in Mmathethe village, whose household has been ravaged by mysterious fires since the end of May into this month, are still trying to understand the source of their now charred life.

Last week, another fire broke out, this time around nearly hurting their daughter who is doing Form 2 at Mmathethe Junior Secondary School.

Head of the family, Baliki Tlhobogang, told The Midweek Sun that they have lost hope and now fear for their lives. He said if they could, they would all sleep outside the house.

Currently they all sleep in the sitting room.

He said the situation is now worse following intervention by a church that he did not name. The fire targets the school uniforms and books of his children.

“I am aware that the schools are offering the children counselling to help them deal with emotional stress,” said Tlhobogang, adding that however, she was worried about the psychological toll this was having on the kids.

The family is disheartened by the turn of events. Last week, they watched helplessly as the fire erupted in their tuck-shop.

Meanwhile, Mmathethe area ward councillor Thandi Ntebang said she was aware of the family situation. The family has so far been assisted with five blankets. Ntebang said the family has gone through an assessment which will allow Botswana Red Cross Society to help them.

She has also notified Member of Parliament for Mmathethe Dr Edwin Dikoloti and he promised to assist the family accordingly. She is worried that this is the third fire incident to occur in her area.
