Kanye Magistrate, Koziba Kgakole-Mokokong on Monday blasted a 46-year-old man for living in his mother's home at his age and ordered his eviction.

This is in a case where Solomon Monnawatsie, 46, appeared before court for severely beating one of his minor nieces and traumatising another at his family home in Manyana, Poane ward.

The case prosecutor, Sergeant Lenah Banyaditse, revealed that the accused frequently insulted his mother and picked fights with family members.

The accused was also reported to have other previous cases with his family before the customary court, involving fights with family members.

It was revealed that the suspect assaulted his eight-year-old niece with a harsh slap to her right eye, causing injuries in the eye and her hands.

Investigations Officer, Sergeant Ramotsana Kelebogile, presented evidence in the matter, stating that the accused is often aggressive and difficult to arrest.

Kelebogile revealed that the family had long planned to evict him, as he occasionally damages family property without any apparent reason.

When given the chance to speak, not pleading guilty to the assault charge, Monnawatsie stated that the police officers are interfering in family matters, insisting that the issues lie with the officers, not his family.

He claimed that he lives in harmony with his family and at the time of his arrest, he was peacefully drinking tea with the same nephews he is accused of abusing.

The prosecutor argued that the accused should be denied bail, as he shares a home with the victim. Magistrate Mokokong asked the suspect when he intends to leave his mother’s home.

He replied that he planned to build his own house, but the construction materials were stolen in 2018. Concerned by this, the magistrate gave him an ultimatum, to choose between being temporarily jailed or vacating his mother’s house.

Monnawatsie chose to leave, and the magistrate ordered that a police officer accompany him to collect his belongings from the family home.

The case resumes on March 10th. The suspect was given a conditional bail, restrained from entering his mother's place, and tampering with victims and that he had to report to Manyana police post

weekly.

SIDE BAR

According to a 2024 report compiled by author and blogger Rachel Kaplan, the average age at which people move out of their parents' home is between 24 and 27.

This typically occurs after many individuals have completed their secondary or college studies, and around the time when they may get married or enter long-term relationships with serious partners.

Moving out can be a significant challenge, especially financially, for those who are uncertain about their next steps in life.
